The highly versatile and modular construction solution, Yorkon, was developed and is used by Portakabin to create award winning offices, school buildings and hospitals. However, it was recognised at the early stages of design that the ultra-lightweight flooring was particularly susceptible to high vibration responses to walking. The unique nature of the floor design meant that existing design guidelines for floors were not applicable and a thorough investigation was required. Full Scale Dynamics worked with Portakabin and over a four-year research programme, developed a floor system with considerably improved performance. This was achieved through Portakabin building numerous prototypes which Full Scale Dynamics then tested, modelled and analysed to indicate areas of improvement. Ultimately this partnership devised an effective solution and improved the dynamic performance of the floors by an order of magnitude.
